A Historical Look at Aerial Photography

Interested in the history of aerial photography? Please read on to discover more about this unique form of photography.

In 1909, Wilbur Wright (of the Wright Brothers’ fame) was the first person to take photographs from a high-flying airplane.

Twenty-five years later, in 1934, The American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) was founded with the purpose of advancing the field of aerial mapping and photography.

Then, in 1957, the Russian satellite, Sputnik, was the first artificial satellite launched into space. This was a huge step in the field of aerial photography because, according to Wiki.org, Sputnik, “… helped to identify the density of high atmospheric layers through measurement of its orbital change and provided data on radio-signal distribution in the ionosphere.”

In 1972, NASA launched the first of the Landsat satellites. Thus began the selling of satellite imagery for commercial purposes.

And here we are today. Aerial photography is used by real estate developers, archaeologists, cartographers, and many other professionals. Like we stated in the beginning, aerial photography sure has come a long way!
