Quilting the Modern Way

Quilting is an enduring American tradition that has come to signify the importance of family and kinship through the ages. One of the earliest communal quilting traditions goes back to the slave trade when African slaves would create beautiful traditional quilts with bright colors and diamond patterns. These quilts told stories of birth and re birth; and tribal customs, and designs included patterns that kept away evil spirits.

As quilt making went main stream, they began to be used to record memories, and to create a family heirloom that could be passed on to generations. Motifs and patterns were included to celebrate special moments, and soon photos began to make their appearance. The quilt had evolved into a large family photo album that you could actually wrap around yourself.

It’s harder to find the time to make traditional quilts these days, and technology has made it possible for you to create heirloom pieces that can be passed on to your children. A personalized photo blanket with pictures of important moments in your family life, not only makes a comforting quilt for your child when used as part of her kids bedding, but can also be gifted to your children when they leave for college as a unique personalized gift. With a blanket full of memories to wrap around themselves, your kids will never feel like they are so far from home.
