Return to the Rockies

The Rocky Mountains in Alberta will always have a magical aura in my memories. Alberta is a territory of Canada, just north of Montana in the United States. I was born in Edmonton, the capital city of Alberta, and lived there until I was six years old. We often drove to Banff and stayed in a resort that my grandparents owned and operated at the time. My mom loved to ski; she’d been doing it since she could barely walk, and my Dad, although a bit clumsy, was always right behind her, laughing and tottering. Just last January I went back for the first time, on a Banff ski vacation. Some of the resorts have changed quite a bit; some of the more rustic ones are pretty much just as I remember them. I decided to try one of the Canada coach tours on the Internet, and I was glad I did. I suppose I was initially hesitant because I was in some way worried that the reality of the mountains wouldn’t match my romanticized and childish memories. When I arrived in Banff and caught my first glimpse of the mountains I remember thinking that memories can’t do them justice. It looked like some god or titan carved them out with furious strokes. Later I tried one of the Canadian Rockies vacations and found it to be even more relaxing and pleasant.
